`Cat burglar’? Suspect stuck on roof trying to escape cops, fire department gets him down
ST. LOUIS • Police arrested on Thursday night a burglary suspect who led officers on a foot chase before settling on an unusual escape strategy: He climbed onto the roof of a home and attempted to hide there.
Police surrounded him, but couldn’t initially get him down. Ultimately, a fire department ladder unit had to be brought in to retrieve the stranded suspect, who was then arrested.
According to officers, it began with a call to police of a burglary in progress in the South Hampton neighborhood. Police arrived and a foot chase ensued for several blocks.
At the 5800 block of Sutherland Avenue, the suspect allegedly climbed onto the roof of a bungalow in an attempt to hide from the pursuing officers. It didn’t work.
The suspect, whom officers at the scene described as a “well-known burglar,” was in custody late Thursday. Additional information wasn’t immediately available.
