Clerk armed with bottle scares off robber with hammer at Chesterfield gas station
CHESTERFIELD • A robber armed with a hammer ordered a gas station clerk to “empty the register” in Chesterfield on Sunday morning.
But the clerk didn’t comply — and instead grabbed a bottle to defend himself.
The clerk moved toward the would-be robber, and that was enough apparently to stop the holdup. The robber ran out of the store and no one was hurt, police say.
It happened at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday at the Circle K Shell Gas Station, 14804 Clayton Road.
Police broadcast a description of the getaway car and the robber. A Ballwin police officer on patrol saw a car matching that description and stopped the motorist.
Authorities on Monday charged Jordan N. Fendelman, 22, with first-degree robbery. Fendelman lives in the 100 block of Shirley Lane in Ballwin.
He was being held on $50,000 bail.
Chesterfield Police Capt. Steve Lewis said police officers generally advise people confronted by someone who is armed to give them whatever they demand in terms of money.
“We encourage clerks and potential victims to take whatever action they deem necessary to protect their lives,” Lewis said. “In this case, the clerk assessed the situation and felt defending himself with a bottle was his best option.
“And fortunately … it turned out well,” he added.
